About Reemly's Design Studio

Reemly's Design Studio Interior

Founded with a deep respect for India's rich weaving heritage, Reemly's Design Studio is a sanctuary for textile art. We believe in the slow, meticulous process of handcrafting sarees, where every thread is imbued with the spirit of the artisan. Our studio serves as a bridge between traditional techniques and contemporary elegance, offering pieces that transcend fleeting trends.

Our journey begins at the loom, where we collaborate closely with skilled weavers across the country. By championing ancient techniques like Ikaat (Bandha), we ensure that these time-honored traditions continue to thrive in the modern era. Each saree is a testament to the dedication required perfectly align the dyed yarns into intricate, mesmerizing patterns before they are even woven.

We continuously explore the boundless possibilities of texture and design. Through complex Dobby and elaborate Jala work, our artisans breathe life into the fabric, creating raised motifs that add depth and character to every drape. The interplay of warp and weft becomes a canvas for storytelling, weaving motifs inspired by nature and our cultural roots.

The hallmark of our collections is the unmistakable elegance of classic Temple borders. This intricate interlocking technique, traditionally revered and painstakingly crafted, frames our sarees with structural beauty and grace. We take immense pride in preserving this meticulous artistry, ensuring that every piece honors the ancestral hands that perfected it over generations.

At Reemly's Design Studio, we are not just creating clothing; we are preserving a living heritage. Our commitment to sustainable practices and fair trade empowers our artisan communities, fostering a future where craft continues to flourish. Each creation that leaves our studio is a labor of love, artistry and heart.

Revived Weaves

Bomkai Revival | Sonepur Cluster, 2025

This development revisits the Bomkai weaving techniques of the 1980s, bringing back patterns that were gradually fading from practice. The revival focuses on retaining the original extra-weft (jala) detailing and traditional layout, where motifs are intricately inserted by hand. The saree features the distinctive ulta–sidha fish border, a classic Bomkai element, reinterpreted with cleaner alignment and sharper definition. The aanchal carries dense extra-weft patterning, maintaining the technical complexity of the weave while refining its visual balance. Developed in Sonepur, this piece blends archival technique with a subtle modern sensibility, ensuring the craft remains relevant while preserving its original technical character.

Bomkai & Sonepur Weavers

Contemporary Cotton ikaat – A Story of Resilience & Reinvention

Developed during the uncertain times of 2019 in the weaving clusters of Remanda village, these contemporary cotton weaves stand as a quiet testament to adaptability and craft revival. When the world slowed down during Covid, our weavers turned to innovation, reimagining traditional ikaat techniques into designs suited for the evolving lifestyle of the modern wearer. Crafted in fine, breathable cotton, the weave features subtle stripes interplayed with delicate ikat motifs, creating a textile that is both structured and fluid. The lightweight texture and understated patterns make it ideal for everyday office wear, balancing comfort with a refined aesthetic. What makes this weave special is its minimal yet thoughtful design language, rooted in tradition but tailored for contemporary needs. The muted palette, clean lines and rhythmic ikat detailing reflect a shift towards functional elegance, without losing the essence of handloom artistry. More than just a fabric, it represents a phase where craftsmanship adapted to changing times, keeping the looms active, sustaining livelihoods and giving rise to a new category of modern, wearable handloom.

Cotton ikaat Weavers

Sonepuri Contemporary Weave

Developed in 2025, this weave is an exploration of how Sonepuri handloom can transition into newer design languages, while staying deeply anchored in its weaving heritage. This design explores a contemporary interpretation of the Sonepuri weave through a structured use of zari stripes across the body. The patli section incorporates the phoda khuma technique, where extra-weft motifs are manually inserted, adding subtle texture within a largely plain ground. The aanchal is developed using fine bandha (Ikaat), interwoven with zari to achieve precision in motif alignment and a soft reflective finish. The controlled resist-dyeing combined with zari insertion highlights the technical strength of the weave. Paired with a striped blouse, the saree presents a clean, contemporary aesthetic and modern composition while retaining the integrity of traditional Sonepur craftsmanship.

Sonepuri Weavers
Dusphulia Weavers

Dusphulia Weave

Revival of the Dusphulia weave, reintroduced by Reemly’s Design Studio in 2022, as a tribute to the intricate Bandha traditions of the Sonepur cluster. In this saree, the Dusphulia border becomes the focal narrative which is meticulously structured and woven with four distinct traditional motifs: fish, tara phula, turtle and rudraksh, each carrying symbolic meaning and requiring precise alignment during the Ikaat (Bandha) process. The complexity lies in achieving clarity and continuity of these motifs, as the design is resist-dyed onto the threads before they are set on the loom. The body is intentionally kept understated with fine butti, allowing the border to stand out, while the aanchal carries a more elaborate expression of the weave. This revival is not just about bringing back a design, but about re-engaging with the technical depth and discipline of Odisha’s weaving heritage, where every motif is planned, dyed and woven with remarkable precision.

Baapta Tissue Weaves

Baapta Tissue Weave

Revived in 2023 in the weaving clusters of Barpali, the Baapta tissue weave marks a thoughtful return to one of Odisha’s most exquisite yet lesser-seen handloom traditions. Historically, Baapta sarees were prized for their intricate craftsmanship, where fine cotton or silk yarns were interlaced with zari, creating a fabric that carried both richness and lightness. In its revived form, the weave has been reimagined using tissue yarns, lending it a soft metallic sheen while keeping the drape airy and summer-friendly. The process remains deeply rooted in handloom techniques, where the careful interplay of warp and weft brings alive a luminous surface without overpowering the textile’s elegance. What sets this revival apart is its balance of heritage and contemporary design, featuring delicate butti motifs, refined textures and a refreshed colour palette suited for today’s aesthetic. The revival of Baapta in Barpali is not just about bringing back a weave, but about reclaiming a legacy, supporting skilled artisans and ensuring that these intricate traditions continue to evolve while staying true to their roots.

Khandua Weave

A Contemporary Expression of Khandua • 2024

Rooted in the heritage of Nuapatna, this piece reimagines the timeless Khandua weave through a contemporary lens. Introducing structured stripes into the traditional layout, the saree balances rhythm and restraint while preserving the essence of its origin. The body carries clean, elongated stripes interspersed with delicate motifs, while the borders retain their intricate detailing, anchoring the weave in tradition. The aanchal unfolds with classic artistry, creating a seamless dialogue between past and present. An evolution, not a departure, this design reflects our continued effort to keep traditional weaves alive by thoughtfully adapting them for today.

Traditional Ek Phulia , Phoda Kumbha Weave

A revival rooted in memory and mastery… This saree is crafted in Pure Patta silk, a nuanced blend of pure tussar and mulberry silk yarns, bringing together the textured character of tussar with the fluid drape and natural sheen of mulberry. At its heart lies the revival of the Siddha Ulta border, a traditional weave reinterpreted with precision. Each motif is painstakingly created through manual thread lifting, where individual warp threads are lifted by hand and interlocked with the weft, without the use of jacquard. This extra-weft technique lends the border its sharp geometry, depth and distinctive handcrafted identity. The border is further enriched with the classic Phoda Kumbha, grounding the design in Odisha’s weaving vocabulary, while maintaining a restrained and elegant aesthetic. The saree is completed with a Bandhakala aanchal, where resist-dyed ikat patterns add rhythm and movement, creating a harmonious interplay between structure and fluidity. Lightweight yet rich in detail, this piece stands as a quiet revival, where heritage techniques are not merely preserved, but thoughtfully brought back into contemporary relevance.

The Weaver Communities We Work With

India’s handlooms are more than just garments; they are woven chronicles of our history, geography, and spirituality. Behind every exquisite motif and vibrant dye lies an artisan family whose craft has been honed over centuries.

We partner with generational weavers across the textile heartlands, ensuring that their artistry is both protected and celebrated. Our studio serves as a conduit between these rural masters and the contemporary world.

Through direct, transparent collaboration, we bypass intermediaries to bring you authentic, meticulously crafted sarees while fostering sustainable livelihoods for the communities we so deeply respect.

Gopalpur

Known for its fine tussar-based weaves and intricate loom techniques, the Gopalpur cluster brings together traditional craftsmanship with subtle contemporary design. Here we work closely with artisans using jala and dobby setups, developing sarees that feature delicate lifting thread work, textured borders and refined motifs. Many of our contemporary explorations, including minimal bodies, structured borders and detailed aanchal designs, which are developed on these looms while still preserving the cluster’s traditional weaving knowledge.

Gopalpur Weavers

Sonepur

Sonepur is renowned for its rich Bandha (ikaat) heritage and distinctive weaving vocabulary. The weavers here have mastered the art of resist-dyed yarns that form intricate patterns once woven on the loom. In collaboration with these artisans, we develop sarees featuring traditional phoda kumbha borders, dusphulia borders, revival of old bomakie weaves and finely woven ikaat aanchal designs, while experimenting with new colour stories and contemporary layouts using zari and ikaat together that keep the craft relevant for today.

Barpali Weavers

Barpali

The Barpali cluster is known for its fine cotton weaving traditions and elegant temple-inspired borders. Working with these looms, we often explore lightweight summer textiles, blending yarns such as fine tussar in the warp with mul cotton in the weft to create fabrics that carry the sheen of silk and the comfort of cotton. These weaves are especially loved for their breathable textures and subtle natural tones.

Nuapatna Weave

Nuapatna

Nuapatna is one of Odisha’s most historically significant weaving clusters, deeply associated with the tradition of Khandua and Bandha textiles that have been preserved for centuries. Known for its fine handspun silk yarns and intricate tie-dye techniques, the cluster carries a rich legacy of weaving textiles that are both culturally and spiritually significant. The weavers of Nuapatna are especially known for their precision in creating detailed motifs, including traditional patterns and script-based designs that require immense skill and planning. In collaboration with these artisans, we work towards reviving and reinterpreting classic Khandua and Bandha weaves by introducing refined layouts, balanced compositions and contemporary colour sensibilities. We have also developed striped contemporary weaves on these looms, bringing a modern rhythm to a deeply traditional craft. A significant part of our work here also includes the revival of age-old weaves belonging to Reemly’s grandmother, reimagining these heirloom textiles with sensitivity while preserving their original identity and emotional value. While staying rooted in tradition, these textiles evolve into pieces that remain relevant and wearable today, without losing their cultural essence.

Kotpad

The Kotpad cluster is known for its unique tradition of natural dyeing and tribal weaving practices. The textiles are distinguished by their earthy tones created using dyes extracted from the roots of the aal tree, a practice that has been preserved by the weaving communities of the region for generations. Working with the Kotpad artisans allows us to celebrate this rare craft by developing textiles that retain the authenticity of the traditional colour palette while exploring refined design layouts and wearable forms. The beauty of Kotpad lies in its quiet elegance , where natural dyes, simple motifs and handwoven textures come together to create fabrics that are deeply rooted in the land and its culture.
